NHTSA (National Highway Traffic Safety Administration) High-Speed Tests

IWI's Witness has been tested twice at the NHTSA TRC Test Facility in East Liberty, OH. The first set of tests occurred in early January, 2001. These were high-speed (30mph+ events), frontal collision tests designed to measure data recording accuracy of the Witness black box.

The Witness was to be compared to the NHTSA reference equipment in the trunk of a Dodge Neon. The NHTSA equipment is "live-wired" meaning the monitors are on all the time recording everything that is occurring.

The crash was conducted at 35 mph into a concrete barrier

Results:

The Witness matched the NHTSA’s own results with a margin of error of less than 5%, far exceeding expectations. While this is incredible, it wasn't good enough for our engineering team. Since 2001 we have been able to improve upon this stellar performance.

IIHS (Insurance Institute for Highway Safety)

Event Data Recorder technology holds the promise of impacting the auto insurance industry world wide. There is extreme interest in how the technology might be able to reduce costs associated with fraud, protect both the insured's and the insurance providers, and give insurance companies vital data that can be used in developing new products and services.

Due to this focus on EDR technology, IWI was invited by the IIHS to participate in both low and high speed test crashes at their facility in Arlington, VA in May, 2001. The tests were conducted in various pickup trucks. Once again, the Witness was compared to the costly IIHS reference equipment.

Results:

The Witness performed flawlessly, matching the IIHS data with a margin of error of less than 2%.

NHTSA Round Robin

In August, 2001 NHTSA conducted a set of round robin tests at their TRC facility in East Liberty, OH. Their purpose was to compare current EDR technologies that are available to the public. IWI along with two of our competitors were invited to participate in the tests.

All three participants were to be compared to the reference equipment installed by NHTSA in the bed of a Ford F150 pickup truck.

The test accelerated the F-150 into a concrete barrier at 30 mph. Within minutes of the test being completed, IWI had extracted our trace data and provided it to NHTSA.

Results:

Independent Witnesses technology was validated with less than a 2% margin of error versus the NHTSA reference equipment.  The competitors’ products did not even prove to be compliant with test specifications.
